What is in a Getting Started box, and is it better than a plain Combat Patrol?

Short answer

For a first-time Space Marine or Ork buyer, yes. It is a full Combat Patrol plus 11 paints, a brush, a texture spreader and a faction booklet, in push-fit models that need no glue. Both boxes are £86.11; the Space Marines box is in stock and the Orks box is sold out at the moment. A plain Combat Patrol is £82.95 to £86.11.

It only comes in those two armies. For any other army the way in is a plain Combat Patrol.

Our listings do not mention paints or a brush in a plain Combat Patrol, so a Getting Started box is the simpler start for Space Marines or Orks. For any other army, add a Paints and Tools set to a plain Combat Patrol.

What the box does not include

  • Clippers. The contents list has none. Models come on frames, and our Paints and Tools listing says clippers are used to remove them.
  • A primer. The 11 paints include base colours such as Abaddon Black, but no primer is listed.
  • Terrain and a board. Those are in the Starter Set.
  • Rules beyond the booklet. The Combat Patrol rules are free in the Warhammer 40,000 app.

Space Marines or Orks first?

Choose by the look of the army. The Ork box has 20 more models, so it is more painting. If you want a smaller first project, the Space Marine box has 13.

Common questions

Do the Getting Started boxes need glue?

Games Workshop says the models in both boxes are push-fit, so you do not need glue to get going. Plastic glue is optional.

Which Getting Started box has more models, Space Marines or Orks?

Orks, with 33 models against 13 for the Space Marines, according to our listings. That makes the Ork box the bigger painting job.

Is there a Getting Started box for other armies?

Games Workshop announced two on 5 July 2026, one for Space Marines and one for Orks. Other armies start with a plain Combat Patrol.

Do I need clippers with a Getting Started box?

Almost certainly. Push-fit parts still come on frames and need cutting off, and the box lists no clippers. The Paints and Tools sets include a pair.
