Is the Armageddon box a good first Warhammer 40,000 purchase?
Last checked 29 October 2026.
Yes, if you want a lot of models and two armies in one launch box. No, if you want the simplest start: its contents list has no terrain, boards, dice or starter handbook.
It holds 61 push-fit miniatures. It is £153.00 (RRP £185.00) here and is sold out at the moment. The Starter Set is the box for opening and playing.
What is in the box
| Part | What is in it |

The miniatures come unpainted and need some assembly. The Dominatus deck is for linked games across a weekend or event with your usual army. It can stay in the box until you have played a few games.
Armageddon or the Starter Set?
| Item | Armageddon | Starter Set |
|---|---|---|
| Models | 61 | 46 (13 Space Marines and 33 Orks) |
| Terrain and boards | None in its contents | A pair of battlefield boards and terrain |

Armageddon gives you 15 more models and some extra books. The Starter Set gives you everything to play on a table. If you already have terrain and dice, the extra models are the point. If you do not, the Starter Set is the better first box.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who wants to play the day they open it. Without terrain and boards you need a table setup, and without a starter handbook you rely on the Core Rules and the app.
- Anyone who wants one army. You pay for two. A Getting Started with Space Marines or Orks box is one army with paints, and the Combat Patrol rules in the app are free.
Can you play the 11th edition without it?
The Core Rules are a free download, so yes. Games Workshop also announced standalone releases of the Core Rulebook, the Mission Deck and the Dominatus Deck for anyone who skips the launch boxes. We list the Dominatus Narrative Campaign Deck at £17.00. Buy the box for the models; you do not need it to play.

Common questions
How many miniatures come in the Warhammer 40,000 Armageddon box?
61 miniatures: 23 Space Marines and 38 Orks. They come unpainted and need some assembly. The 11th Edition Starter Set holds 15 fewer, 46 in all.
Can I paint the Armageddon Space Marines as a different Chapter?
The listing names no Chapter for them, so the colours are your choice. Which army to collect for a colour covers it in full.
Are the Armageddon models push-fit, and do I need glue?
Both the Space Marines and the Orks are push-fit, so they click together without glue. Plastic glue, such as our 15g plastic glue at £4.15, is optional and tightens the seams.
Does the Armageddon box come with a rulebook?
It holds a Core Rules booklet, and Games Workshop says the box has a physical copy of the rulebook. The contents list names no starter handbook, which is a Starter Set item.
