What Warhammer gift suits a child or teenager?
If they are starting from nothing, the Age of Sigmar Introductory Set at £34.76 is a glue-free game for two with a brush and six paints in the box. If they want sci-fi and have asked for an army, the Getting Started boxes are push-fit, which means no glue, and include paint. Before you buy, find out whether they have started, who they will play with and who will pay for the second box.
What to find out first
- Have they started? If they own models, ask for their next three wants and buy one. A child who paints one army will not thank you for a different one.
- Who will they play with? A game needs an opponent. Ask which game their friends, club or parent use, then buy that one. Fantasy (Age of Sigmar) and sci-fi (Warhammer 40,000) boxes do not mix.
- Who pays for the second box? A first set leads to more. If you are an aunt, uncle or grandparent, tell the parents what you are buying. One reply in a Reddit thread on gifts for kids (August 2026) says to do this too, because the costs run on.
We give no age rating, because our listings carry none. The pieces are small and the tools are sharp, so for a younger child plan to build the first model together.
Starting from nothing: which box
| They are after | Box | Our price |
|---|---|---|
| Fantasy, and a game for two | Age of Sigmar Introductory Set: 25 push-fit miniatures, a 48-page handbook, a playing mat, a ruler, six dice, a brush and six paints. No glue needed. | £34.76, in stock |
| Sci-fi, and they have asked for an army | Getting Started with Space Marines: a full Combat Patrol, 11 paints, a brush and a texture spreader. Push-fit. | £86.11, in stock |
| Sci-fi, to play against you | Starter Set (11th Edition): two armies, two boards, terrain, dice and the Core Rulebook. Add paint. | £126.40, in stock |
| To paint a first model | Space Marine: Intercessors and Paints: two models, a brush and six paints | £18.78, in stock |
Glue, clippers and small parts
Push-fit means the pieces press together, so the Age of Sigmar set and the Getting Started boxes need no glue. Their listings do not include clippers, so pieces come off the frame by hand, and some thin parts can come away rough. Paints and Tools (£22.83, sold out at the moment) adds clippers, a mouldline remover, a brush and 13 paints, and it is the extra to buy with these.
The older Introductory Set for Warhammer 40,000 is a 10th Edition box. It includes clippers, but the game is now on its 11th edition, so ask the player before you choose it.
What to leave out
Skip a full Combat Patrol for someone who has never built a model and has not asked for an army of their own. It is a whole army at £82.95 to £86.11, and a first-timer is better off with one small box. Skip a box bought to spark an interest in a child who has not asked for one, because a box bought hopefully can sit unopened. Leave rulebooks and codexes out too. They go out of date when an edition changes, and our listings do not say which edition each one is.
Common questions
Is Warhammer a good gift for a child who has never tried it?
It can be, if they have shown interest and the box builds without glue and includes paint. The Age of Sigmar Introductory Set does both and costs £34.76. Check the small pieces and sharp tools against the child's age.
Should I ask the parents before buying a child a Warhammer set?
Tell the parents first, because a first set is only a start and the hobby grows with more boxes and paints. Then the next purchase is their decision.
What Warhammer gift suits a teenager who already paints?
Ask for their wish list and buy one item from it. A teenager building an army has already chosen it. If you cannot ask, a tool suits a painter of any army: see gifts for painters.
Which Warhammer set can a parent and child play together?
The Age of Sigmar Introductory Set holds Stormcast Eternals and Skaven, a mat, a ruler and dice, so two people can play. For sci-fi, the Starter Set at £126.40 holds two armies and two boards.
