What can I buy for £100, £200 or £300 to start Warhammer 40,000?

Short answer

One army with paint included is the Getting Started box at £86.11. A game for two with paint is the Starter Set plus Paints and Tools, £149.23 (the Paints and Tools set is sold out at the moment). With £300, add a first Combat Patrol after your first game, which brings the bundle to £235.34, then stop and paint. Do not spend it all on day one.

Three bundles, with totals

Fits £100Getting Started with Space Marines alone: a full Combat Patrol, 11 paints, a brush and a texture spreader. One army with paint, push-fit.£86.11
Fits £200Starter Set plus Paints and Tools: two armies, boards, terrain, dice and rulebook, then clippers, a brush and 13 paints. A game for two, ready to paint.£149.23
Fits £300The £200 bundle plus one Combat Patrol (T'au Empire shown) for whoever wants a third army£235.34

The Paints and Tools set in these bundles is sold out at the moment. The 10th Edition set at £21.73 also holds clippers, a brush and 13 paints, and gifts under £25 lists it.

Spend in this order

  1. Models first. One army or one starter game. You can paint and play with that for weeks.
  2. Paint and a brush second, unless the box already holds them. The Getting Started boxes do. The Starter Set does not.
  3. Tools third. Push-fit models need no glue. The Paints and Tools set adds clippers, which tidy the cuts.
  4. A second army last, after the first game. By then you know which faction you want.

Why not spend the lot

Start small, buy the units you like and paint what you buy. A big first purchase can sit unbuilt. A Combat Patrol is a whole army at £82.95 to £86.11, and the Starter Set already holds two.

Pick the Starter Set and Paints and Tools bundle, play a game, then spend what is left on whichever faction you enjoyed.

Leave these out of a first budget

  • A codex or rulebook for a faction you have not chosen. The Starter Set and the free Core Rules cover a first game.
  • A second set of tools. One pair of clippers, a knife and a brush is a start.
  • A second paint set. Buy single pots when a scheme needs a colour.

Cheaper ways in

The Age of Sigmar Introductory Set is a complete game for two at £34.76, which is in stock. It holds 25 push-fit models, a mat, dice, a brush and six paints. It is a cheaper way in than the 40,000 bundles above, though the two games do not share models.

For 40,000, Space Marine: Intercessors and Paints at £18.78 gives two models, a brush and six paints, which is enough to try the hobby.

Common questions

How much does it cost to start Warhammer 40,000?

Two models and paint cost £18.78. A whole army with paint is £86.11, and a game for two with paint is £149.23.

Is £100 enough to start Warhammer 40,000?

It is enough for one army. The Getting Started box is £86.11 and includes a Combat Patrol, 11 paints and a brush. You will need an opponent who has models, or buy the Starter Set later.

Should I spend my whole Warhammer budget at once?

Buy one box, build it, paint some of it and play before buying more. A game teaches you which faction to buy next.
