What should I buy someone who paints Warhammer models?

Short answer

Buy what a painter uses up or puts off buying: brushes, cutters, a knife, a palette. Buy paint only if you can read the names off their pots. Skip beginner paint sets, because an experienced painter already owns most of what is in them.

Why tools come first

One Reddit reply to a thread on gifts for a hobbyist who has everything says the writer spends on models and paint and never on tools, and uses the basic ones from an old starter set. Cutters and a knife are worth a look for that reason: a painter will use them and may not have bought them.

Warhammer Community, Games Workshop's news site, says the Super Fine Detail Cutters were redesigned with thinner blades and one cutting edge. The Citadel Knife comes with six blades, so a dull one can be swapped. The Servo-Skull Palette is silicone with 24 wells for paint, and warm soapy water cleans it once the paint is dry. Those notes date from 2022 and 2024, so check the listing for the current kit.

When paint is safe

Paint is a good gift only with a list. Read the names off the pots on their desk and buy the ones that look low. Our titles start with the paint type, usually BASE, LAYER or CONTRAST (sometimes just B or L), which tells you the job each does. Contrast paints are made to go over a light basecoat.

Older pots say Citadel Colour. The newer ones say Warhammer Colour. Games Workshop describes Warhammer Colour as "the exact same paint", so a new pot matches an old one by name.

What to skip

  • Beginner paint and tool sets. They hold a standard spread of colours plus a starter brush, which a painter already has.
  • A colour for a scheme you cannot see. Without the name on the pot, any pot is a guess.
  • An airbrush kit. It is specialist kit with many parts, and painters have firm views on what they use. Ask first. We do not sell airbrushes.

Common questions

What tools would a Warhammer painter want as a gift?

Cutters, a hobby knife, a silicone palette or a painting handle. These are easy to put off buying, so they are less likely to be duplicates than paint or models.

Can I buy Warhammer paints without knowing someone's colour scheme?

Only if you can read the pot names. Photograph their desk and buy the same names, ideally the base colours they use most. Otherwise give a tool.

Do old Citadel paints match the new Warhammer Colour pots?

Old and new pots match by colour name. Games Workshop renamed the range in March 2026 and says Warhammer Colour is the exact same paint. Our listings may still show either name.

What is the safest Warhammer gift for someone who paints?

A silicone palette, because it suits a painter of any army. The Servo-Skull Palette is £7.31 and sold out at the moment. The painting handle XL in the Small parcel is the next safest.
