Can I buy just the Orks or just the Space Marines from the Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set?

Short answer

Not from the Starter Set: we list it as one box and do not sell either half separately. For one army, buy the matching Getting Started box instead. Getting Started with Orks and Getting Started with Space Marines are £86.11 each.

If a friend wants the other army, splitting the Starter Set at £126.40 works too.

Which boxes hold the Orks and the Space Marines

Four boxes carry the two launch armies for the 11th edition: the Orks' Combat Patrol is called the 'Ardmob, and the Space Marines' one is the Assault Force.

BoxWhat is insideOur price
Getting Started with OrksThe whole Ork Combat Patrol, 11 paints, a brush, a texture spreader and a faction booklet. The models are push-fit, so no glue.£86.11, sold out at the moment
Getting Started with Space MarinesThe whole Space Marines Combat Patrol, with the same paints, brush, spreader and booklet.£86.11, in stock
Starter SetBoth Combat Patrols, two battlefield boards, terrain, dice, rulers, the Core Rulebook, a handbook and reference sheets. No paints in the contents list.£126.40, in stock
ArmageddonBoth Combat Patrols plus some extra models, with a rulebook and two card decks.£153.00, sold out at the moment

We also list a Combat Patrol: Orks box. Its listing does not say which Ork force it holds, so do not assume it is the 'Ardmob from the launch.

What each route costs

Buying both Getting Started boxes costs £172.22. The Starter Set holds the same two armies plus boards and terrain for £126.40, so on price the Starter Set is cheaper. The Getting Started page compares those boxes with a plain Combat Patrol.

Pick on what you want as well as the total. Want to play a first game with a friend? Buy the Starter Set and take one army each. Want one army to build and paint at your own pace? Buy the Getting Started box for it.

How to split a Starter Set with a friend

Splitting works because the box is built as two halves.

  1. Find a co-buyer; the first question below says where to look.
  2. Agree who takes which army, and whether you are splitting the Starter Set or Armageddon, before you pay anything.
  3. Decide who keeps the shared items: the boards, terrain, dice and printed rulebook. The core rules are a free download, so the other person still has the rules.
  4. Price the split by what each of you keeps. If one of you takes the boards and terrain, that person pays more than half.
  5. Keep a paint budget aside. The Starter Set's contents list holds no paints, so whoever takes the Orks or the Space Marines still needs some.

Common questions

Where can I find someone to split a Starter Set with?

Ask friends, a club or a local group chat. If that fails, buy the Getting Started box for the army you want: Orks or Space Marines, £86.11 each. Our page on finding someone to play lists more places to look.

Are the Orks in the Getting Started box the same as the Orks in the Starter Set?

They are the same Combat Patrol. Warhammer Community, Games Workshop's news site, lists the same Ork 'Ardmob Combat Patrol in the Armageddon box, the Getting Started with Orks box and the Starter Set (23 July 2026). The Getting Started box adds paints, a brush and a texture spreader.

Do I need the Armageddon box if I only want Orks?

You do not. The Ork Combat Patrol also comes in Getting Started with Orks. Armageddon adds the Space Marines, a few extra Ork models, a rulebook and two card decks. It is sold out at the moment.
