What is in the Kill Team Starter Set, and what else do you need?

Short answer

The Kill Team Starter Set holds 14 push-fit miniatures in two teams, the Angels of Death Space Marines and the Plague Marines. The box also has a 64-page introductory rulebook, printed MDF terrain, rules reference sheets and tokens for both teams.

Ours is £57.28 against an RRP of £72.50, and it is in stock. You can play your first missions from the box alone. For regular games add the full rules, a tape measure and some spare dice.

What is inside the box

The contents below come from Games Workshop's announcement of the set in October 2024.

PartWhat is in it
Miniatures14 push-fit miniatures in two teams: the Angels of Death Space Marines and their enemies, the Plague Marines. That is seven a side.
Rulebook64 pages written for newcomers. It starts with simple missions, adds rules as it goes and ends with a mission that tests what you have learned. It also has building guides and lore for each team.
TerrainPrinted MDF terrain that slots together in seconds and packs flat.
ReferenceRules reference sheets and tokens for both teams.

Push-fit means the parts click together, so you need no glue. Before this box, both teams were hard to find because they had only been sold as blind-box figures, sealed packs where you do not know which model you will get.

What you still need

  1. Spare dice. They are handy for tracking wounds, and two colours help.
  2. A tape measure. The current edition measures in inches. A Games Workshop tape measure is £4.94 here.
  3. The full rules, a few games later. The 64-page book is built for first missions. For regular games Games Workshop lists the Core Book among the essentials, and it sells it packaged with the core token sheet. Our Kill Team Core Book is £31.60 and is sold out at the moment.
  4. Paint and a few tools, only if you want colour. The models play fine in bare plastic. When you want to paint, our paints and tools guide says what to buy first.

Check the model count before you buy

Some buyers report a cheaper boxed "beginner" set that looks like the Starter Set. They describe teams of five models, so ten in all against the Starter Set's 14, with less terrain and no full rulebook.

The box we list is titled Kill Team: Starter Set. Those details are buyers' reports, so on any other box count the miniatures listed on the back before you pay. You want 14 miniatures, printed MDF terrain and a 64-page rulebook.

Who should buy it

It suits two people starting together: each takes a team, and neither needs anything else for the first missions. It also suits one person who likes both Space Marines and Plague Marines. If you only want one team, a single team box costs less. Wrecka Krew, an Ork team, is £34.76 and is sold out at the moment.

Common questions

What is the difference between the Kill Team beginner set and the Kill Team starter set, and is the beginner set worth it?

The Starter Set holds 14 miniatures in two teams, according to Games Workshop. Buyers of the cheaper beginner box describe five models a side, less terrain and no full rulebook, so the Starter Set is the safer buy for two players. The box we list is the Starter Set.

Do I need the Kill Team Core Book as well as the Starter Set?

Not for the first missions, because the 64-page rulebook covers them. For regular games you want the full rules. The Core Book comes with the core token sheet, and ours is £31.60 and is sold out at the moment.

Is the Kill Team Starter Set still the current one?

There is no newer edition. It was announced in October 2024 for the edition that began that September. The older 2022 starter set, with Death Korps and Kommandos, belongs to the previous edition.
