Is it a bad idea to start Tyranids just because they look cool?

Short answer

No. Looks are a sound reason to choose a first army, because you will spend hours painting it.

Tyranids are a swarm army, so a first purchase should be small. The Tyranid Paint Set+ holds three Termagants, a Ripper Swarm, six paints and a brush, for £17.78 (sold out at the moment). The 10th Edition Introductory Set holds 10 Termagants and a Ripper Swarm, for £33.58 (in stock).

Why looks are a sound reason

In March 2026 a new player asked on Reddit whether picking Tyranids purely for their looks was a bad idea. The top replies agreed: play what looks cool, because rules change and models last.

Games Workshop published balance updates on 30 September and again on 1 October 2026, so how strong an army is moves within months. Whether you enjoy building and painting it stays the same.

The asker also wanted a "brutal, uncomplicated" style of fighting. We cannot promise how any army will play from a forum post, so try a Combat Patrol game at a club or shop before you buy a second box.

The catch is the word swarm

A Tyranid army can mean many hundreds of small models. A Reddit thread asking how many Termagants is too many came from a collector with 200 built and 290 still to do. That is where a collection can end up. Start much smaller.

The Combat Patrol is the opposite shape. Games Workshop described Combat Patrol: Tyranid Assault Brood in July 2025 as 10 Genestealers, 3 Tyrant Guard, a Biovore and the Parasite of Mortrex. That is one fast squad of ten Genestealers with a few larger models, so a first army from this box is far from a swarm.

If you go ahead

Start with the models that tell you the most: three Termagants and a Ripper Swarm, which the Tyranid Paint Set+ and the Introductory Set both hold. Paint them and see whether you like the work.

If you do, the Combat Patrol is the next box, or a box of Termagants if you want the swarm look. Finish what you own before the next purchase. A Tyranid collection grows fast.

Common questions

Are Tyranids hard to paint?

A box list cannot tell you, so test it. The paint set costs £17.78 and holds six paints, a brush and four models in the Hive Fleet Leviathan colours. Paint those four before you buy a box.

Do the Tyranid Paint Set+ models need glue?

The Termagants and the Ripper Swarm are push-fit, so you need clippers and no glue.

Which paints come in the Tyranid Paint Set+?

Six: Corax White, Wraithbone, Naggaroth Night, Thunderhawk Blue, Magos Purple and Armageddon Dust, plus a starter brush.

How many Termagants is too many?

There is no fixed number. Buy a box, paint it, and stop when painting stops being fun.

Is the Introductory Set a good way to start Tyranids?

It gives you 11 Tyranid models for £33.58, plus five Space Marines. It is titled 10th Edition, so use it for the models and not for its handbook rules.
