Is Adeptus Mechanicus a good first Warhammer 40,000 army?
It can be, if you enjoy small, busy detail. Players warn new buyers that Mechanicus infantry are fiddly to paint and that the army costs a lot. Test it with one cheap model, one bigger kit or one Kill Team box before you buy the Combat Patrol.
The Adeptus Mechanicus Combat Patrol is £86.11 here (RRP £109.00) and is sold out at the moment.
What players warn about
- Painting. Many units are spindly and hard to paint for a beginner, one reply said. A painter asking for an easy Mechanicus model was told that most of the army is "greebly little infantry".
- Cost and time. Undecided newcomers on a budget were told twice to look elsewhere, in replies calling Mechanicus expensive and demanding of hobby time.
- One player's experience. A player pushed a friend into Mechanicus because the look suited the friend. The friend hated painting them, disliked how they played and moved to Knights.
Test the painting before you spend on the army. If you love the cogs, cables and robes, the warnings may not matter to you.
Who should look elsewhere
If you want an army on the table inside a month, or you paint to a deadline, try an army with fewer models. If you are torn between Mechanicus and the Astra Militarum, the Astra Militarum page sets out what that army asks of a painter.
Three ways to test it
You do not need all three. Any one of them tells you whether the painting suits you, so use whichever box you can get.
- Paint one small model. The Skitarii Marshall is £17.78 (sold out at the moment). If you enjoy it, the Skitarii squad is £29.23 (sold out at the moment).
- Try a large surface. The advice to that painter was to go bigger than infantry, such as the Kastelan Robots or a Dunecrawler. Games Workshop announced the Eye of Terror Battalion for Mechanicus in March 2026 as three vehicles: an Onager Dunecrawler, an Ironstrider Ballistarius and a Skorpius Dunerider. We list the battalion at £82.95, and it is sold out at the moment. It is a bigger spend than one model, so it suits you if you already lean towards the army.
- Try a small game. The Kill Team: Battleclade box is £36.74 and is sold out at the moment. It is a small Mechanicus team, and Kill Team is skirmish combat, so one box lets you paint and play before you decide on the full army.

Common questions
Are Skitarii hard to paint?
Some players say so. They are busy, with lots of tubes, robes and small parts. Paint a single Skitarii Marshall (£17.78, sold out at the moment) as a test.
Is there a larger Mechanicus model to practise on?
Kastelan Robots and a Dunecrawler were the suggestions made to a painter asking for an easy start, because the surfaces are bigger. The Eye of Terror Battalion, announced as three vehicles, is sold out at the moment here. Our listing gives no contents, so go by Games Workshop's announcement.
Do I need the Codex to start Adeptus Mechanicus?
Not for a Combat Patrol, whose rules are free in the Warhammer 40,000 app. The Codex is £31.21 (sold out at the moment) and becomes useful once your army grows beyond the Combat Patrol.
