How many Ork Boyz do you need to start an army?
Start with 20. That is how many Boyz come in Getting Started with Orks (sold out at the moment) and in the Armageddon box (sold out at the moment), and it is enough to play your first games. The Ork Boyz box holds 11 miniatures and is in stock.
In one September 2026 Reddit thread, replies ranged from no Boyz at all to 60 or more, so no number is right for everyone. Buy more only after you have painted and played the first 20.

The Boyz in Armageddon and Getting Started are push-fit. The 20 come on two identical sprues of 10, but the arms swap between bodies, so no two Boyz need to match.

What players say they run
The replies in that r/orks thread broke down like this.
- One player runs three units of 20 and says their games are casual.
- Several run somewhere between 20 and 60. One has 60 and says it is not enough.
- Others run none and use shooting units and walkers instead.
- One player's old 180-Boy army no longer fits the current rules.
The rules change with updates, so buy slowly.
A buying rule for Ork Boyz
- Buy the first 20 in Getting Started with Orks, or in Armageddon if you also want the Space Marines.
- Paint them and play three games. You will know by then whether you want a bigger crowd.
- Add Boyz in boxes of 11. Two extra boxes cost £64.78; three cost £97.17.
- Stop at what you can paint. Buy the next box only when the last one is done.
Common questions
How many Ork Boyz come in Getting Started with Orks?
Twenty. The box also holds ten Gretchin, a Warboss, a Weirdboy and a Wartrakk, so 33 miniatures in all. The models are push-fit and need no glue.
Do all 20 Armageddon Ork Boyz look the same?
They can all look different. They come on two identical sprues of ten, but the arms fit at least two different bodies and the nine regular heads fit any body except the Nob. Games Workshop says you can build 20 different Boyz.
Can I use old Ork Boyz in my army?
Players on Reddit say they do, and many mix old and new and use the Boyz they already own. Ask your opponent or club first. The older kit and the new push-fit kit differ in style, so the mob will not match.
Is one box of 11 Ork Boyz enough?
It is enough to start painting but not to fill a Combat Patrol. The Combat Patrol in Getting Started holds 20 Boyz, so one 11-model box is about half of that.
