Do you need a battletome or the Core Book to play Age of Sigmar?
Rules facts checked 29 October 2026.
You do not need the Core Book: Games Workshop gives away the core rules and the advanced rules in its free app. Armies without a battletome get a free faction pack there too. Once an army has a battletome, the code in the book unlocks that army's rules in the app, so the battletome is the book to buy for that army.
Buy the Core Book if you want rules and setting in print, at £36.74. Buy a battletome, the book of rules and background for one army, when you have settled on that army and want its book on the table.
What you get for nothing
- The app. Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar app is free. It holds the core rules and the advanced rules. Armies without a battletome have a free faction pack there, with its warscrolls (the rules for each unit), and each faction has Spearhead rules.
- The handbook in the box. The Introductory Set has a 48-page handbook and the Starter Set a 64-page one. Both teach the game by scenario or tutorial, so your first games need no other book.
- Points and updates. Points for battletome armies are published online, not printed in the book, and rules updates arrive as downloads. The latest came on 28 October 2026.
What the printed books add
| Book | What is inside | Free instead |
|---|---|---|
| Core Book | The launch-box version ran to 272 pages: the Mortal Realms and their history, the core rules and the advanced rules | Core and advanced rules in the app |
| Battletome | One army's history and background, then its battle traits, battle formations, spell and prayer lists, and a warscroll for every unit, plus its Spearhead rules | For an army with no battletome, its free faction pack in the app |
| Gamer's Edition battletome | A smaller softback with the same content, plus an expanded set of warscroll cards | Nothing. |

Which book suits which player
- Your first games: neither book. Use the handbook from the Introductory Set or Starter Set.
- Spearhead: neither book. The rules are free, and what you are missing is a board and cards, as the Spearhead page explains.
- You dislike playing from a phone: the Core Book, for a printed copy of the rules.
- One army for the long term: that faction's battletome, once it has one. Its code opens the army's rules in the app, and the book adds the lore and a printed reference for the table.
Check the edition before you buy a battletome
Games Workshop retired every battletome that existed before the 2024 edition, and gave each faction a free pack of new rules instead.
- Check the copyright year on the credits page. A book from 2023 or earlier is for the old rules. Treat a 2024 date as doubtful, because new battletomes only began to follow in autumn 2024.
- Ask us before buying if you are unsure. The battletomes collection lists the books we hold, and our contact page reaches the shop.
Common questions
Is the Age of Sigmar app free?
The app is a free download that Games Workshop released for the 2024 edition. Its rules reference runs from the core rules to each faction's Spearhead rules.
Are old Age of Sigmar battletomes still usable?
Not for the current rules. Games Workshop retired every earlier battletome when the new edition launched in 2024. Each faction received a free pack of rules.
Do Age of Sigmar battletomes include army points?
Not in print. Games Workshop publishes points online when each book launches, with a QR code in the book linking to them. The back of each book has a reference sheet of the army's most used rules.
