What do I need to start Necromunda?
Buy the Necromunda: Skirmish Core Set. It holds two gangs of eight (House Escher and Goliath Bruisers), a board, terrain, the Core Rulebook and the dice and markers. Its description calls it everything you and a friend need to start.
The Core Set is £80.98 here and is sold out at the moment. Then add the Gangs of the Underhive book for your house's gang list and, when you want more fighters, an Underhive Crew box.
A new edition arrived in summer 2026
Games Workshop revealed a new edition of Necromunda in summer 2026, called Necromunda: Skirmish. Its Core Set went on pre-order on 1 August. Games Workshop says it brings together more than nine years of updates into one cleaner rule set. The core of gang warfare in the underhive stays the same. Specialisations for gangers, a save value for every fighter and scenario cards are among the changes.
Products with Necromunda Skirmish in the title belong to the new edition. Older titles, such as the 2021 Hive War box, were written for the previous edition. A listing titled only Necromunda: Rulebook (English) does not say Skirmish, so check the edition before you buy a book.
What the Core Set holds
The Core Set: Necromunda Skirmish holds:
- 16 miniatures: eight House Escher and eight Goliath Bruisers.
- One game board and one Zone Mortalis: Factoria Pipe terrain kit.
- The Necromunda Core Rulebook, plus gang tactics and campaign scenario cards.
- A starter guide and construction booklet.
- 54 condition and status markers, a folding range ruler, dice and templates.
The miniatures come unpainted and some assembly may be required. The listing does not say they are push-fit, so plan on clippers and plastic glue.
What a gang box adds
Each Underhive Crew box holds a gang of unpainted miniatures. The counts on our listings differ by house.
| House | Miniatures | Our price |
|---|---|---|
| Cawdor | 16 | £46.61, in stock |
| Delaque | 17 | £46.61, sold out at the moment |
| Escher | 20 | £46.61, sold out at the moment |
| Goliath | 16 | £46.61, sold out at the moment |
| Orlock | 18 | £46.61, sold out at the moment |
| Van Saar | 16 | £46.61, in stock |
A starting gang is small. A Games Workshop designer says he aims for eight to ten fighters when founding a gang, so one crew box is plenty for a first campaign.
Which book you still need
The Core Rulebook has 168 pages and covers the lore, core rules, the campaign, scenarios, gang tactics and skills, and the Trading Post. Gang lists live in other books. Gangs of the Underhive (£26.47, sold out at the moment) runs to 128 pages and covers Cawdor, Delaque, Escher, Goliath, Orlock and Van Saar, plus Palanite Enforcers, Venator gangs and Corpse Grinder Cults. Games Workshop has also begun releasing Underhive Journals for individual houses (Escher and Goliath so far, with Orlock announced), with extra fighters, equipment and variant gangs. You do not need a journal to start.
Terrain
The Core Set's board and single terrain kit are a starting point. Necromunda rewards height and clutter: a smaller board with several connected levels beats a large flat one, and almost any industrial scatter works. We list Zone Mortalis and Thatos Pattern terrain in the Necromunda range.
Common questions
Do I need the Underhive Journal to play Necromunda?
You do not need one to start. Underhive Journals add extra fighters, equipment and variant gangs for one house each, so they suit a campaign you are already enjoying. Start with the Core Set and Gangs of the Underhive.
How many people do I need to play Necromunda?
Two people are enough. The Core Set is described as everything you and a friend need to start. More players make bigger campaigns, but they are not required.
Should I buy the old Necromunda books now?
Not if you are starting now. Necromunda: Skirmish is the new edition, with pre-orders from 1 August 2026, so buy books with Skirmish in the title and check the edition on anything titled only Necromunda.
What is the difference between a Necromunda Core Set and an Underhive Crew?
The Core Set is the starter box: rules, board, terrain, cards, dice and two small gangs. An Underhive Crew is only miniatures, 16 to 20 of them for one house. Buy a crew when you want to field a house the Core Set does not hold.
How long does a game of Necromunda take?
It varies. In one r/Necromunda thread, a player said games take one to two hours once you know the rules.
