Am I too old to start Warhammer?

Short answer

You are not too old. Warhammer Community, Games Workshop's news site, says Warhammer is for everyone. Eyesight, steady hands and spare time can all be harder with age. Push-fit boxes such as Getting Started with Space Marines at £86.11 need no glue, a bright lamp helps the eyes, and short sessions fit a busy week.

Starting as an adult

One Warhammer Community writer came back to the hobby as an adult after playing a Warhammer video game, and has painted and played for years since.

What helps with eyes, hands and time

  • Fiddly glue and tiny parts. Push-fit kits click together, so you need no glue. Try Getting Started with Space Marines at £86.11 or Getting Started with Orks (sold out at the moment).
  • Small details are hard to see. Use a bright, adjustable lamp and a way to magnify. Test reading glasses at the distance you hold a model, which differs from book distance.
  • Not much free time. Paint three models at a time, not a whole squad. How to paint in batches has the method.
  • No idea where to begin. Start with one small box that holds paints: Intercessors and Paints at £18.78, or Paints and Tools at £22.83 (sold out at the moment), which adds tools.

A first month for an adult starter

  1. Week one: build one squad from a push-fit box. Do not paint yet.
  2. Week two: prime and basecoat that squad in short sessions. Stop when the light or your eyes tire.
  3. Week three: shade the squad and base it. Stopping here gives you a tabletop-ready unit.
  4. Week four: decide. If you enjoyed it, buy the next box. If not, you have a painted squad and have spent no more than the cost of one box.

Finding people to play with

Warhammer Alliance clubs are aimed at young people, so look for a regular local group, club or shop game night. Our page on finding someone to play has the steps. If you only want to paint, you do not need to play at all.

Common questions

Is Warhammer just for teenagers?

Adults play, paint and collect too. Games Workshop runs Warhammer Alliance for young people.

Can an adult with no painting experience start Warhammer?

A small box is the easiest way in. Start with one that holds paints, such as Intercessors and Paints at £18.78, and paint a few models at a time, sizing each session to the time you have. Getting Started with Space Marines at £86.11 is a full Combat Patrol with paints.

Is it too late to start collecting Warhammer after years away?

The 11th edition is a good moment to restart, and the core rules are a free download, so you can see what changed before you buy. What has changed in 11th edition covers the detail.
